FAQS
-
Yes, cork has natural fire-resistant properties. Its cellular structure contains suberin, a waxy substance that makes it slow to ignite and prevents the spread of flames. At Corkinho, we further enhance its resilience by carefully treating and finishing our cork applications, ensuring safety while maintaining its natural beauty.
-
Cork is one of the most sustainable materials available. It is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber) without harming the tree, allowing it to regenerate naturally. A single tree can be harvested multiple times over its lifetime. Additionally, at Corkinho, we use cork bark leftovers, upcycling them into refined design pieces, ensuring a zero-waste approach.
-
Cork is naturally water-resistant due to its unique cellular structure, which repels moisture and prevents absorption. However, while it resists water, prolonged exposure to excessive moisture should be avoided. To enhance durability, we apply protective finishes where needed, making it suitable for interior applications, furniture, and sensory-driven spaces.
-
Cork is highly durable and retains its elasticity and structural integrity over time. It is resistant to wear, absorbs impact, and maintains its shape even under pressure. Its natural ability to regulate temperature and sound makes it an ideal material for acoustic panels, furniture, and flooring, ensuring long-lasting comfort and aesthetics.
-
Cork develops a natural patina over time, subtly changing in tone due to exposure to UV light and air. This aging process adds character to each piece, much like leather or wood. To preserve its appearance, we apply a thin varnish layer to some of our designs, ensuring both protection and longevity while maintaining the material’s sensorial qualities.
-
Yes! Cork is an excellent natural insulator, absorbing both sound and temperature fluctuations. This makes it ideal for interior spaces where acoustic comfort and thermal regulation are key. It helps reduce echo, creating a warm and serene atmosphere, making it particularly beneficial in hospitality, retail, and wellbeing spaces.
-
While cork is naturally resistant to moisture and temperature changes, prolonged exposure to direct UV light and heavy rain may alter its appearance. For outdoor applications, we recommend treated or protected cork finishes, ensuring durability and longevity in varying climates.
-
Cork requires minimal maintenance. Simply wipe with a damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or excessive moisture. For furniture or high-use surfaces, occasional reconditioning with a natural wax or protective coating can help maintain its texture and color.
